Background of the study
Chronic illnesses impose significant economic burdens on families, affecting not only the health of individuals but also the financial stability of entire households. In Ogbomosho North Local Government Area, Oyo State, the rising prevalence of conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases has led to increased healthcare expenditures and loss of income (Adebanjo, 2023). Families are often forced to allocate a substantial portion of their limited resources to manage long-term treatment, leading to economic strain and reduced quality of life. Research suggests that the cumulative costs of chronic disease management can exacerbate poverty and social inequality (Balogun, 2024). Moreover, the indirect costs, including lost productivity and absenteeism from work, further burden families. This study aims to assess the economic impact of chronic illnesses on families, exploring both direct and indirect costs. It also seeks to identify potential coping mechanisms and policy measures that could alleviate this burden (Femi, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Families in Ogbomosho North face substantial economic challenges due to the high costs associated with managing chronic illnesses. These challenges include direct medical expenses, indirect costs from lost income, and long-term financial instability. The economic burden not only affects the quality of life of patients but also has broader socio-economic implications for the community. Limited insurance coverage and inadequate government support further compound the problem, underscoring the urgent need for effective interventions (Adebanjo, 2023; Femi, 2025).
Objectives of the study:
To quantify the direct and indirect costs of chronic illness management.
To examine the economic impact of chronic illnesses on family finances.
To propose policy recommendations to reduce the financial burden on families.
Research questions:
What are the direct and indirect costs associated with chronic illnesses in Ogbomosho North?
How do these costs impact the financial stability of affected families?
What policy measures can alleviate the economic burden on families?
Research Hypotheses:
Chronic illnesses significantly increase the financial burden on families.
Indirect costs such as lost income contribute substantially to overall economic strain.
Policy interventions can mitigate the financial impact of chronic disease management.
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it highlights the economic challenges faced by families managing chronic illnesses, offering data-driven insights for policymakers and healthcare providers. The results aim to support the development of strategies that ease the financial burden on affected families (Adebanjo, 2023; Balogun, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is confined to assessing the economic burden of chronic illnesses on families in Ogbomosho North Local Government Area, focusing on local healthcare costs and financial impacts.
Definitions of terms:
Chronic Illness: A long-term health condition that requires ongoing management.
Direct Costs: Medical expenses directly related to treatment.
Indirect Costs: Financial losses due to reduced productivity and income.
